KleindierenExpo 2008
All photos are courtesy of Bill and Marianne Mairs -
photos taken in Utrecht, the Netherlands.  Utrecht
is located in the center of Holland, not far from
other famous cities, such as Amsterdam, Den Haag,
Leiden, Rotterdam, and Gouda.  Edwin Broekhuizen
says that "all of these cities are close together
(within a radius of 50 Km).  This is because Holland
is such a beautiful small country."  Edwin also
provided explanations for the photos - our thanks to
Edwin & his fellow Thrianta breeders for sharing
show information with us, along with wonderful
educational information about the Thrianta!
Oudegracht, Utrecht
Show Hall - this is the judging area for
the National Convention.  Wil Plasmeijer
(with blue trousers) was bringing
Thriantas to the judge.
Judge Peter Oude Groothuis examining a
Thrianta, with Edwin Broekhuizen writing
the show report.
Senior Judge Piet van Lune (in the white
coat), Edwin Broekhuizen (in the green
coat), and Piet van Lune's son (also a
judge) taking photos for a presentation on
Thriantas for the
Thrianta-Hulstlanderclub.
Edwin Broekhuizen, Wil Plasmeijer, and
Willem van de Ruit
"The Thrianta pictured above has "...perfect belly color.  All judges and top breeders
have to admit they have never seen such a beautiful belly color.  And also the 'deck'
color of this Thrianta was acceptable (not too dark)."  Edwin also said that "I was
lucky, I bought this Thrianta - other breeders and judges were jealous."
"This is Willem van de Ruit and Bill Mairs.
Bill Mairs bought the champion buck from
Willem.  This buck was this year's
superior.  He won both big National Shows
(Noordshow and KleindierenExpo).  At the
KleindierenExpo were in total 81 Thriantas.
The young buck of Willem van de Ruit was
the best of breed.  Three weeks before
at the Noordshow the same buck was also
the BOB.  The Noordshow is the second
National Show in Holland.  Here 77
Thriantas were shown."

Edwin also sent us the comment card on
this buck, pictured at right.  In
explanation, Edwin says that "at our shows
each rabbit is assessed individually on all
seven positions of our Standard.  For each
rabbit a report is written...I have done
my best to make a translation:

Pos. 1 Weight, excellent 2.5 kg - 10 pts
Pos. 2 excellent type and body, very good
front legs and "stelling"           - 19 pts
Pos. 3 excellent dense fur        - 19 pts
Pos. 4 excellent head, excellent ear length
9 cm, very good ear shape, stand and
structure                            - 15 pts
Pos. 5 some ticking on deck and ears, very
good belly color, good tail color, very good
nail and eye color                  -  14 pts
Pos. 6 excellent "tussenkleur" and ground
color on deck, very good ground color on
belly                                 - 14.5 pts
Pos. 7 - excellent condition       - 5 pts

TOTAL SCORE:  EXCELLENT, 96.5 pts"
"This Thrianta has a beautiful
orange-red 'deck' color, but it loses too
much pigment (red-factor) in the belly,
as you can see."
"Always a point of discussion, what is the right color?"
Edwin explains the term "stelling" as
the way "the rabbit shows itself, the
way it stands on its front legs.  A
Thrianta should have a middle high
stelling."

He explains the term "tussenkleur" as
"the color of the hairs between the
hair top and hair base."  Translated
literally into English, Edwin explains
that this term would mean "between
color."  In the American Standard of
Perfection, we refer to color that
"must be carried well down the hair
shaft to the skin."
